California Sea Lions
California sea lions are very social animals. Groups often rest closely packed together at favorite haul-out sites like this dock north of Monterey. They even stick together in the water, forming rafts and putting their flippers up in the air, which is thought to regulate body temperature. Despite their name including the word "California", this sea lion can be found from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, to the southern tip of Baja California in Mexico.
I don't usually give my photos clever names but every time I look at this, I can't help refer to it as "The Family Portrait"
