Great Horned Owl
While it's not quite autumn yet - this Great Horned Owl sitting among the warm tones of the background trees reminded me it is on its way. Autumn is a great time to listen for the hooting pattern of this species because they will begin marking their nesting territories and courting in preparation for mating season in the winter months. As the air cools, it is easier to hear their calls because sound travels farther under these conditions. These owls typically mate for life so this is serious business for them. Now hooooo-hoo-hoo-hoos ready for fall and their magnificent calls?
