American Beaver
This is a North American Beaver, a common inhabitant of rivers, streams, lakes and ponds throughout the United States. They are classified as semi-aquatic mammal who spend the majority of their lives in water to protect themselves from predators. Their exceptional dam building skills allow them to access food safely and retreat underwater if needed. When they do submerge, they can stay under for up to 15 minutes! While beavers have excellent hearing and sense of smell, their eyesight is poor. One of the best ways to capture a photo of them up close is to get very low to the ground and quietly photograph as they swim by. This guy heard my camera shutter as he swam by, slapped his tail on the water and dove under - not to be seen again.
