Northern Flicker
This is a Northern Flicker, a medium sized bird of the woodpecker family. It is North America’s widest-ranging woodpecker, a common inhabitant of forest edges, savannas, and suburban areas. These birds use their long, slightly curved bills to probe into the soil, anthills, and rotting wood for ants and grubs. Ants make up a large portion of their diet. They also engage in a unique behavior called anting, where they use the formic acid from ants to assist in preening and keeping themselves free of parasites.
