I visited Little Wild horse Slot Canyon as an add on to a planned trip to Goblin Valley State Park in Utah. If you are not familiar with Goblin Valley, it is in the middle on nowhere and wildly popular. I really enjoy slot canyon's and try to visit and photograph them anytime they are near areas I am visiting. Little Wild horse Slot Canyon did not disappoint!

What is Little Wild horse Slot Canyon?

Little Wild horse is a beautiful slot canyon featuring deep, narrow, and colorful canyon walls.

  • The entry fee is $0
  • No permit is required as of this writing
  • There is a vault toilet at the trail head, but no water, or other services.
  • There is no cell phone reception in the area.
  • This can be done as a loop hike that spans 4.5 to 8.2 miles, or you can just walk up the canyon as far as you like then come back the way you came.
  • The canyon is very accessible, meaning there are no major obstacles or deep drop offs to enter like some other slot canyons. However, be prepared to scramble over some larger boulders and squeeze into very narrow sections.

When is a good time to visit?

  • This canyon can be visited any time of the year, but generally March - November is good.
  • As with all slot canyons, do not enter if there is rain in the forecast as it is prone to flash floods.
  • This is one of the most popular slot canyons in the San Rafael Reef and Utah. Getting an early start will ensure you get a place to park and make it easier to navigate the really tight sections before the crowds arrive.

Where is this canyon?

Little Wild horse Slot Canyon is located in South Eastern Utah, roughly 3.5 hours south of Salt Lake City, with the closest town being Hanksville. It is a good stop if you are visiting Utah's "Big 5" and are travelling between Capital Reef and Arches National Parks.

Why should I visit?

The photographic opportunities here are great but even if you aren't into that, the hike alone is pretty amazing.
