Kit foxes
These are a few members of a family of Kit Foxes that I was lucky to spot on a recent trip. These foxes inhabit semi-arid environments from the southern U.S. to central Mexico. These are the smallest members of the fox species, smaller than your average house cat at 3.5 - 6 pounds! They are nocturnal, retreating to their underground dens during the heat of the day. Their diet primarily consists of rodents, rabbits, and insects, which they hunt at night. I was fortunate (and surprised) to catch this family out just before sunset and while they look more cute and cuddly than threatening, the killing field of mouse carcasses in the area would suggest otherwise!
