Cruising the Plains

This is an American Bison, cruising the plains of Yellowstone National Park. Bison ancestors existed in Asia roughly 2.6 million years ago, crossing the Bering Land Bridge from Asia to North America. The bison we know today have been recorded back 5,000 years. Before Europeans settled North America, there were tens of millions of bison roaming the continent but, by 1883 they were hunted to near extinction. Now, 142 years later there are just over 20,000 wild bison and another 360,000 bison managed as livestock. You might hear people refer to these as buffalo but these are completely different species, with Bison being native to North America and Europe, and buffalo being native to Asia and Africa.
