West Thumb Geyser Basin
This is West Thumb Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone has the world's largest concentration of geothermal features as a result of being on top of the Yellowstone Caldera, a massive volcanic system, which fuels the park's geothermal activity. If you watched the documentary Yellowstone Supervolcano, you might be a bit nervous to visit this park especially since they described it as 'sitting on a ticking time bomb...that will trigger the end of civilization as we know it.' I'm not clear if the intent was to scare the bejesus out of people but the entire area is monitored for signs of volcanic activity, including earthquakes and ground deformation, making it a safe and lovely place to explore. During this visit, there was a storm rolling in just before sunset so this area, which would typically be packed with people, had just a few strolling about.
