Chasing lights: a mild obsession photographing car lights

I have a mild obsession with car lights right now. I am fascinated with how I can incorporate them into my compositions and how I can use them to illuminate the curves in the road.  Here is a selection of photos where I have included car lights in the frame.

This was shot in the evening on the General’s Highway in Sequoia National Park. They had a late spring storm that dusted everything with a good layer of snow. It probably wasn’t terribly safe to be standing here since I was downhill from cars whizzing by on a slick road. It was worth it.

I just had this image in my latest post on the Perseids Meteor shower. While I was in Yosemite, I saw this tree and decided I would try to work the car lights into the shot.

This is another shot from Yosemite. I was standing around waiting for it to get dark and thought I could get a nice road shot of this stretch winding around Olmsted Point.

This is the first shot I took with my new fisheye lens. I went up to Tahoe specifically to shoot night photos and thought this would be a neat shot as I was waiting for it to get dark. It turned out okay but I like the next shot that I took in Yosemite much better.

After I took that shot in Tahoe, I was thinking it would have worked out better if I was a little higher than the cars. I scouted this shot during the day and came back after sunset to shoot it. This spot was great because I was high up on a big pile of rocks and this section had a wide curve that was accentuated by the fisheye lens, making the rock look like an island. This is a great example of when you shoot something and don’t love the end result so you keep working the idea until you get what you are looking for.

This is a shot from Tahoe that I noticed on an earlier trip. I couldn’t really find a good time to go back up to shoot it. Then I remembered that I was going to be up in Reno one Saturday so I just drove up Friday night, busted out some photos, then swung over to Reno the next morning. The problem was that this stretch of road was being prepped for major road work and there were orange cones everywhere. I had to do some clean up in Lightroom to remove these. I was lucky that the Milky Way happened to be in view while shooting. Note: this is 2 shots; one exposure for the foreground and one for the sky.

This is actually an oldy but a goody. I shot this while in Jedediah Smith State Park on Howland Hill Road. This is probably one of my favorite drives in the redwoods. If you go first thing in the morning, you will have the place all to yourself.

This is another I posted under my Perseids trip blog. Shooting cars and stars on the side of the road at 4:00 am is a perfectly normal thing to do.  Note: this is a composite where I have taken many continuous shots of the sky then merged in post process to build the star trails.

One more shot in Yosemite. This was in the valley in early autumn.  The colors hadn’t really turned enough so I was trying other compositions. This is one of my favorite sections of road in the valley. Yosemite does not disappoint!

This is a shot I took over Labor Day weekend. It's not quite what I had hoped for. There weren't nearly as many cars driving up here as I expected. I did get some other night photos that I am using in an upcoming blog post so it wasn't a total loss.
