Border wall between Arizona and Mexico

Border wall between Arizona and MexicoBorder wall between Arizona and Mexico

This is a section of the border wall constructed between the United States and Mexico, starting in 2017. It is visible from the campground within the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. It also runs parallel with a road that leads visitors to the park's only permanent water source, Quitobaquito Springs. The springs are a great location to spot birds and wildlife so I was disappointed (and confused) when a park ranger informed me visitors were discouraged from traveling that road due to increased levels of illegal migrant encounters within the national monument boundaries. I decided to drive closer to the road to have a better look at the wall. It is 30 feet tall. The average 2 story building is 18-25 feet tall. I was scratching my head, trying to understand how and why there would be increased illegal entries with such a massive wall in place. I did some research and found that thousands of migrants have crossed using either open floodgates or squeezing through gaps cut in the 6-inch wide steel "bollards" by smugglers using battery-powered tools. I could not locate recent numbers but as of March 2022, the wall had been breached over 3,000 times. Wildlife do not have power tools, so their ability to migrate across theses lands to access food, water, and sites to raise young have been significantly impacted by the presence of this barrier.
