Crested Caracara with spiny desert lizard
This Crested Caracara, described as a large tropical falcon or Mexican Eagle, was flying back to it's nest of three fledglings with what I believe was a Desert Spiny Lizard. These birds are opportunists and will feed on carrion, but they are also avid hunters and skilled at hunting on the ground, giving them an advantage of seeing prey that might otherwise be hidden - such as lizards. I had never seen these birds in the wild so being able to see a family of five exhibiting nesting, hunting, and feeding behavior was pretty special.
